It existed back in the 19th century in either Delaware or Maryland, where young ladies like Ann Morriss learned how to make samplers using typically large satin stitches and incorporating design elements such as butterflies, grapes, exotic birds and other nice touches.
Dated 1821 and mounted on acid free backing in a period birdís eye maple frame measuring two feet square exactly.
