170 years ago the master August Edouart visited Saratoga, New York, for the purpose of cuttling lifelike silhouettes of Americans vacationing there. This signed example, cut in 1840, depicts both the Clark and Andrews families, and includes seven adults, two children and a pet dog. The background is hand painted in sepia, most likely by Edouart.
The painted maple frame is appropriate but not period, measuring 19ΒΌ" by 39" overall. Group silhouettes by Edouart are scarce, and seldom appear on the market.
Provenance: Sold by E. Grosvenor Paine at the Lake Forest Academy Antiques Show in 1977.
