New York Firemark

New York Firemark

The Phenix Insurance Company of Brooklyn went out of business in 1910. The headline in the New York Times read "SHELDON'S COMPANY MADE FALSE RETURNS" and one of the sub headlines said "Directors and State Authorities Deceived as to Losses in San Francisco Fire--Books Were Falsified."

The firemark retains old coats of paint, with what appears to be gilding underneath. It is made of sheet brass and dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.
